The collapse of the Soviet Union

There were many forces in play here. But the main thing was the rise of incompetent political hacks who exacerbated problems in a natuaraly difficult to govern country. This eventually manifested itself in the shooting down of the Korean Airlines plane and the Chernobyl disaster, among others.

The republicans are leading the US down the same path and have been for nearly 40 years. The fact that we are not that bad off is because there have been enough people good enough to create a latency to keep things going. But eventually this latency will run out. Clinton and Obama bought us some time. The Trump administration has really sped things up however.

The main thing was the rise of incompetent political hacks who bankrupted their country trying to impose their political and economic system on the rest of the world, notably including Afghanistan.

The republicans and democrats are leading the US down the same path and have been for nearly 40 years.
