Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsPC Really stands for Politely Correct,
not politically correct. Whenever I hear someone complain about political correctness (PC), I know I'm listening to someone who has prejudices of one kind or another and who believes that he or she should be able to express them at any time.
People who make racial, sexual, gender, race, ethnic, disability and other demeaning jokes in group settings are always taking a huge risk. In any group, there may well be people who know or are related to people who are in the group being demeaned. The jokester may well not know that. Why on Earth would anyone take that chance?
It's easy not to give offence. Simply avoid such jokes and don't utter them. Nothing is simpler than that. Be polite. Try not to give offense. How hard is that?

(146,262 posts)I don't turn a blind eye at any demeaning jokes that target any group. They're all wrong, and impolite. Politeness is our way to avoid giving offense to others, primarily. It's the grease that lubricates the gears of society.
I believe you are incorrect in your broad statement. When you claim that some group "invariably" does something, you're sure to be wrong.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post as your very first post on DU. I am honored.

(146,262 posts)It allows for no exceptions, linguistically. Its most common synonym is "always."

(146,262 posts)Jokes that demean groups of people are simply rude. They should be avoided.

(51,308 posts)Ive seen many threads where posters take delight in calling names against Christians, for example. Those posts are allowed to stand.
Lots of hypocrisy on this board in cases such as that.

(146,262 posts)I see fundamentalist Christians, Dominionists, and Right-Wing Christian leaders attacked here. I've seen the Roman Catholic Church attacked for its shielding of sexual abuse of children.
But, I've not seen Christians in general called names, really. In reality, a large majority of DUers consider themselves to be Christians.
I'm not a Christian. I'm an atheist, but I have no brief against Christians in general. I do have one against people who are hypocrites, though, whatever their beliefs might be.
In any case, I'm speaking specifically about jokes that target and demean various groups, rather than criticism of such groups. Jokes.

(146,262 posts)I'm not a big fan of most comedians, really, in any case. That, however, does not mean that I "hate" them. I simply don't like humor that is at the expense of groups of people.
