would he be looking for? and could he prosecute if he finds anything that pertains to his not paying taxes?

(7,947 posts)But that does open another avenue for prosecution-- not reporting income and paying taxes on it is a crime.
I think money laundering is something they're looking at. Now Trump's got so many little corporations and projects going, it would be simple for him to attribute laundering income to some legitimate source and thus pay taxes on it. However, this is the guy who cheated his small-business suppliers over and over. He likes to cheat. He'd probably cheat the IRS too.
So what are some things they might look for on his tax returns?
Enormous capital gains on real estate sales-- like the one in Florida that the oligarch paid $90 mil or so for, and then tore down. When there's money coming in for something inadequate in return, that's probably a good signal for money laundering.
What else? Self-payments to hide the sources of income?
To tell the truth, the number of completely illegal things we already know about-- like his charity paying himself- should be enough. There must be a whole lot hidden that's even worse.

(16,423 posts)- connections to russian organized crime (like Felix Sater, Trump's co-investor at the Trump Soho project)
- connections to cyprian banks that the russian mob uses for money-laundering (Manafort had such connections)
And Mueller could already have them. He can get them if he can convicne a judge that there's evidence in there and the IRS is under no obligation to tell Trump that they gave his tax-returns to Mueller.

(6,324 posts)What he will find is that Trump isnt nearly as rich as he claims to be and is not nearly as good a businessman as he claims to be.
Someone like Trump has his returns audited every time pretty much as a matter of course- all people like him do. They all have teams to tax attorneys that do nothing but tax law and teams of accountants that do nothing but tax stuff working on those on both sides, the righ people and the IRS, constantly.
If there was anything that huge the IRS would have likely caught it by now. Those agents especially the ones assigned cases like his, are very competent and capable professionals. They would spot all those things.
My money is on him just not releasing them because they will reveal he is a fraud in how he portrays himself, not because anything criminal is in them.
