How Trump Will Turn America's Open Internet Into an Ugly Version of China's

https://www.thedailybeast.com/how-trump-will-turn-americas-open-internet-into-an-ugly-version-of-chinas

Do you like Pearl Jam? Without net neutrality rules, AT&T censored their livestream after Eddie Vedder criticized then-president George W. Bush. AT&T also blocked the usage of Apple’s video chat service, FaceTime, in their network, so that customers would have to pay for more expensive data plans. Verizon blocked messages sent by abortion rights group NARAL, saying that their content was too controversial.

The longer this NN fight goes on, the more heinous stuff I learn. I wasn't aware of the NARAL blocking or the Vedder censoring.

"… incumbent Internet Service Providers (ISPs) don’t like this idea, and have been lobbying at the state level for years to limit municipal broadband. Telecom lobbyists spent over $90 Million last year alone[3], cloaking ISP interests in complex laws with dramatic titles like “An act to protect jobs and investment by regulating local government competition with private business.”

There is no free market in the HSD world without antitrust actions like the Ma Bell and Micro$oft cases.

Businessmen (and women) always sing the praises about the free market, except when it comes to their business. The big ISP's do not want broadband at the local level, no way. Only if they provide it, in a monopolistic fashion.

The one thing that really needs public support, and could break the oligopolies is Broadband over Power Lines (BPD). Electricity public utilities have infrastructure everywhere in America.

But again the big corporations stifled that concept until they could figure out how to profit from it.
