Want to Know Why Roy Moore Might Win? Blame the Media.

In the wake of the Roy Moore fiasco, a number of “hot takes” have made their rounds in the media. How obviously hypocritical it is, for example, for evangelical leaders to stand behind a man credibly accused of sexually assaulting a minor. The dim-witted tribalism of people like Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, who all but said she’d elect Jack the Ripper to the Senate as long as he pledged to overturn Roe v. Wade. How Donald Trump could spend most of the 2016 campaign and beyond reveling in accusations against Bill Clinton—that Clinton of course denies—while taking Moore’s own denials at their word. And more to the point, how the president, accused of sexual misconduct by far more women than Senator Al Franken has been, still couldn’t resist taunting Franken from his (undoubtedly gold-tinged) glass house.

All of these are deserving of comment, to be sure. But there is one hot take that the media seems to be missing—the one about the role it has played in creating this sad, sordid, sickening mess in the first place.

How have we reached a point in this country when nearly half the voters of a U.S. state so mistrust, and even revile, major media outlets that they are willing to brush aside credible evidence and elect an accused sexual predator simply out of spite? How have we reached a point where a president of the United States can just declare “fake” news he doesn’t like—and largely get away with it?

In at least one survey, trust in the media—the necessary vanguard of any free society—is even lower than trust in Trump, which itself is nothing to tweet about. How on earth has this happened?

the meme would be "Where was the media?"

IMO, the media is doing its job diligently and not exaggerating the issues.

In 90%+ of states, this A-Hole would be getting his clock cleaned, not leading or even in the polls. It's pretty obvious by now what the lovely people in AL are capable of.

And a few days ago, you were all but calling for Franken to be booted, so why is your thoughts any more valid than this article?

He was also the speechwriter for Rumsfeld. Bear that in mind when considering his analysis.

Also, I have never called for Franken to be booted (or anything close to it).

DC beltway Republicans don't recognize sometimes just how right-wing Republicans in the rest of the country actually are. For instance, the abortion issue supersedes everything else to a wide swath of them.

Do you think they just sprung forth out of the DC ground by themselves? How are they not aware? What on earth makes you think they aren't aware?

that is not the fault of the media. The real problem is fake media. Fox and conservative radio have so poisoned the conservative electorate that they hate real news and anything 'liberal.'

Gerrymandered districts and voter suppression have won republicans everything. The real lesson of the recent off year elections is GET OUT THE VOTE!!!! I don't care if the democrat isn't 100% aligning with your views. You can be damn sure the republican is way more misaligned. Get back the power and never forget what the republican party has heaped upon us.

Roy Moore, Donald Trump, Steve Bannon and Steve Miller are symptoms of the disease that is republicans. It used to be republicans had values that were not anti American. Now they are all marching lock step towards fascism. GET OUT THE VOTE!!!!!!!!!

I don't give a rat's fucking asshole whether Bernie or Hillary were at fault. I know being a self righteous indignant ideologue may very well have destroyed America. GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND VOTE!!!!!! Vote the ticket. The Democratic platform is far far better than a repuke platform. Call your representatives every week. Canvass door to door. Work the phones on a phone bank. Stuff envelopes. Don't argue why the Republican agenda is bad. Speak to why the progressive platform is good. Civil rights for all are important, a living wage is a communal benefit, a fair tax system boosts the economy, women's rights are real. Vote like African American women vote.

In case you missed it GET OUT THE VOTE!!!!!

"Remember all of the hostile press conferences and exchanges that Washington reporters routinely had with the Obama White House, or when Obama’s daily utterances were challenged every day on CNN? Conservatives don’t." Gee, why are they always picking on the Trump Whitehouse? It's exactly the same as the Obama White House! No different! Absolutely NO reason for that to be happening at all! JUSTIFIED! And OMG, 93% of his coverage has been negative? Why, God, WHY!?? are they doing this to him!??!11
