I have set up the Holiday Tree in the picture window in our St. Paul living room. That's my job. I assemble the ancient artificial tree, with its hundreds of little branches. Then, my wife adds the 400 multi-colored LED lights and our motley collection of ornaments that has absolutely no theme whatsoever. My favorite, again this year, is a Hallmark ornament that depicts a post-holiday trash can full of wrapping paper, etc., the detritus of the holiday.
Our cat, who has often caused destruction to the lower ornaments appears bored this year with the decorations. That's a good thing. Our dogs, bless their hearts, have shown no inclination to mark the tree with their ritualistic leg-liftings. Another good thing.
We always put up a Holiday Tree. Why wouldn't we? There are no angels perched on the tree. We have no ornaments that smack of religion. Most are either homemade, found at some garage sale somewhere, or were gifts from some family member or friend. There's a photo of my late mother and father-in-law in an ornament frame. There are items of historical significance to me and my wife that have been converted into Holiday Tree ornaments.
I like Holiday Trees. They're cheery, and give dog-walkers and passers-by something to look at in the window that is different from me slouching on the couch. So, as I look at the newly-erected decoration, I wish you all:
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

(115,674 posts)I might do the tree thing this year for a change, since my cats are now about my age in cat years and might not feel up to the kind of destruction they used to enjoy. However, since I am about the cats' age in human years I am equally likely to say to hell with it and just hang a string of lights on the porch if it doesn't involve getting on a ladder.

(146,286 posts)They ended up staying up until May. Then, why take them down? You'd just have to put them up again. So, about three years ago, I took them down in May, stuffed them all in the wheelie bin and let Waste Management haul them away.
But, I'm not going to give up my Holiday Tree. There are so many cool Holidays this time of year!

(115,674 posts)I live about 15 miles west of you, and the climate isn't much different. A lot of people leave their lights up all year (you don't have to plug them in, after all). The people kitty-corner from me light up their house like the Vatican all year round, and I kind of get a kick out of it.

(146,286 posts)We have some neighbors who have permanently installed holiday lights. It's nice to see their homes lit up from time to time. One neighbor turns the lights on for every National Holiday. I think that's very nice. Very festive and cheery.
I just decided to give up on such lighting. I'm old, you know. I could fall of the ladder or something. That's why I finally put gutter guards on, so I could keep my feet on terra firma.

(15,536 posts)The older I get, the less I decorate and I'm fine with that. I do put up a little artificial tree that takes me about 30 minutes to decorate. I hang a wreath on the front door and some garland and candles on the mantel over my fireplace. That's it. Less is more as far as I'm concerned. My place is welcoming and cozy in the winter time and it looks festive enough for me. Let the young 'uns do all the outdoor lights etc.
Like you, I did gutter guard last year so that I wouldn't have to get up on a ladder any longer.
The holidays got crazier and crazier as the years went on and I'm no humbug, but why can't we just stop with all the materialism? If we would put as much energy into fostering wonderful relationships with others, our country would be much better off. Most of that cheap crap Americans will buy for presents will be in some garage sale or the Salvation Army next year. We don't understand that having tons of cheap stuff isn't going to make us more content with our lives. I have always been a proponent of quality over quantity.
