Many years ago, when a baby was born, a doctor slapped it to make it cry and start breathing. Cruel and barbaric, yes, but common practice.

It's a joke by Rodney Dangerfield: When I was born, I was so ugly the doctor slapped my mother.

I think slapping a new born is still practiced if he doesn't cry spontaneously.

It might look barbaric but it is not. He has to cry to start breathing. If not he dies.
