National Congress of American Indians re: Pocahontas slur

WASHINGTON, D.C. | On November 27, 2017, the National Congress of American Indians President Jefferson Keel issued the following statement:

"We regret that the President’s use of the name Pocahontas as a slur to insult a political adversary is overshadowing the true purpose of today’s White House ceremony,” stated NCAI President Jefferson Keel, a decorated U.S. Army officer and Vietnam War combat veteran. “Today was about recognizing the remarkable courage and invaluable contributions of our Native code talkers. That’s who we honor today and everyday – the three code talkers present at the White House representing the 10 other elderly living code talkers who were unable to join them, and the hundreds of other code talkers from the Cherokee, Choctaw, Comanche, Lakota, Meskwaki, Mohawk, Navajo, Tlingit, and other tribes who served during World Wars I and II. We also honor the service and bravery of all of our veterans and those currently serving from Indian Country. Native people serve in the Armed Forces at a higher rate than any other group in the country, and have served in every war in this nation’s history.

"And we honor the contributions of Pocahontas, a hero to her people, the Pamunkey Indian Tribe in Virginia, who reached across uncertain boundaries and brought people together. Once again, we call upon the President to refrain from using her name in a way that denigrates her legacy."

Again, leaders of the First Nations rise above the blatherings of a clueless ass in the WH.

The Code Talkers are revered by the Corps. Insulting them is insulting all the Marine lives they saved.

Have anything to say, General Kelly?

It insults American Indians And women. He just loves calling people names and insulting them...if it's racial, he loves it even more.

He's like a child on the playground who thinks name calling amounts to something.

Hate and dislike is his main emotional motivator.

And the mistreatment and genocide of Native peoples should be finally addressed in a real way through restoration of their lands and social justice. How long do they have to live in their concentration camps before we come to terms with true history?

I keep wonder is Trump just trying to change the news cycle now that Flynn has flipped
with his over the top crap. i.e. Cover of Time stuff, CNN is fake news, and using a slur
about Native Americans in front of Native Americans.

Either that or he is the biggest asshole in the world.

He is the biggest a-hole and is trying to change the topic.

His antics are masking the GOP's attempts to steal everything that Obama kept out of their clutches as well as any reasonable attempt to get to the bottom of the Russian aided theft of our democracy.

These fans are not what you would call obvious, at all.

But what they have in common is they are white, they hate minorities and will never admit it, and would do ANYTHING for a tax cut.

I find their view on earth, nature and humanity is something we all could benefit from. And now Trump does this. It was no mistake he "honored" the brave code talkers in front of Andrew Jackson's portrait while choosing to include a racist slur by attempting to dishonor a brave woman's name in order to mock another brave woman. His message was loud and clear to his supporters. Either he (I believe he is in the throes of dementia) or people in his camp staged this so instead of honoring these Native peoples, they are displaying outright contempt for them. I truly believe that sometimes you can do something so grievous that the Universe takes notice. Trump's days are numbered.
