A possible record crowd of revelers welcomed the New Year in Times Square, bidding farewell to troubled 2011 on a night when the weather and the vibe were pleasantly warm. Turning up the heat on the spring-like evening was hometown hero Lady Gaga, who pranced through renditions of her "Marry the Night" and "Born This Way" in a skin-tight black suit - and planted a big smooch right on Mayor Bloomberg's lips as the ball came down.
"This is my hometown, and my dream!" she declared after emerging in a bizarre octopus-like outfit that initially showed only her face - with a black mask around her eyes.
The former Stefani Germanotta's appearance capped a daylong street celebration, with Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly predicting it might be the biggest turnout ever in the tradition that dates to 1904.
Gaga, later sporting a giant white mask and Versace outfit, wrapped up the night by joining Bloomberg in setting the Times Square ball on its descent at 11:59 p.m. A one-ton cascade of confetti fell on Times Square as Gaga gave way to the sounds of Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York."

I'm surprised that didn't make her Lady GagGag.

(34,845 posts)It was a New Year's celebration, for Christ's sake! Everyone should chill-out.

(24,979 posts)Like me and everyone else, you, too, decide what the "right thing" is, all the time.
You can bet that to Gaga or any other professional performer with agents and managers, there is no such thing as just being at a "New Year's celebration" on live national TV. To her, it was a negotiated, booked appearance for the purpose of advancing her career, first and foremost.
I don't really care about it, and as condemnations go, mine in this case is mild. Let her do what she likes. But it's not to her credit, and not very cognizant of our times.
Actually, she is no doubt cognizant of whom she is kissing, and of what he currently stands for to the world: the excuser of Wall Street criminality, the brutalizer of street protest.
If she presents herself as an advocate for the right thing in some cases (as in "Born This Way" then she knows that conferring a kiss on this particular character is also a decision.

(3,922 posts)The whole thing was an embarrassment, IMO.
Now we have stages in the middle of TS with a very small, hand-picked audience directly in front (all scions of the 1%, no doubt).
Sorry if I offend anyone's tastes, but just what is the Bieber boy's appeal anyway? You call that singing??
....and what in hell's name was Carlos Santana doing up there?? He looked like he was lost!
Add in the sorry spectacle of watching Dick Clark fade away and you have Entertainment Tonight!

(34,162 posts)I haven't seen that since 1987. I thought it was a band thing.

(24,979 posts)but thanks to the symbol, the cult devotion to MF continues among many, most of whom have never even heard the music.
And it's a champagne glass. The symbol means, "The Party's Over." As in the party of the present civilization and empire. Which it is: the party, anyway, not yet the empire. The three sticks and the cross-stick mean, "Stop World War III." And in the late 1980s, they had tagged it around literally every single subway station in the New York system.

(34,162 posts)When I was a 16-18 year old punk kid from northern NJ, my friends and I would hit the lower east side. I wore jeans, a leather vest with no shirt, and mirror aviators at night trying to channel my best Lou Reed.
I remember seeing it around a lot. I moved away after high school.

(26,219 posts)Just tuned in at the end of Marry the Night but got to see the live Born this Way. I was very surprised to see her change costumes so fast to do the ball drop. Must have had a pit crew lined up and waiting.
She is an extremely talented young woman. I enjoy her music and performances.

i gave up on rock n roll when The Police broke up in 1983.
I don't understand the weird costumes but she is an excellent musician.

(37,982 posts)For the last decade they've made this big deal out of turning it fancy and modern: "It's made from thousand hand-cut crystals!" "It's using state-of-the-art LED lamps!"
And yet, when the time comes for the big reveal, the whole thing just strikes me as "meh".
I miss the old-school ball:

bottom line
(94 posts)I love Lady GaGa, but she self admits drinking like a fish. Unfortunately her music is beginning to have that Twang about it... even born this way (of which I am), and religion, blah.
Some simple advise, lay off.
Now to the bad part, pic of holding bloombottom & dancing & hand, made me want to puke. Bad decision... The price of selling out...
I'm writing this before clicking on post, Oh, please let there not be a pic of a kiss...
If so Baa, Baa, Gaa Gaa, til you sober up girl.
These times are not one to be in a drunken swirl!
there's pics, I know how to scroll, but I feel like pukin again!
