Now I know that feeling of unimageable damage to my country has come to be real. Today is proof positive that there is no hope. The Democratic Party can not hold off fascism when they are so willing to cave to false accusations without a fight. They can't stop the tax scam, dismantling of healthcare and Social Security, the packed courts, gerrymandering, nor racism and hate.
I'm done. I wrote emails to every Democratic senator that called for Sen. Franken to resign. I called and wrote the DNC. I'm now unsubscribing from all their emails, as well as from other progressive political organizations. No more contributions to any, including Common Cause, PFAW, Public Citizen, etc. No more signing dozens of petitions, no more protests, no more picketing GOP offices, no more trips to Washington DC marches.
I have ended my membership within the Democratic Party at the DNC, the state, and county levels.
I'm done. So now, after 15 years, I must say good bye to all my friends on DU. You have supported me through my cancer fight, my pets' deaths, and my sister's suicide. We've argued, laughed, and cried together. I'm sorry.
I will try my best to leave this country as soon as I can.
Good-bye DU.

(31,381 posts)I re-registered some years ago to "Unaffiliated" here in NC, but have never voted for anyone but a Dem. Still, I was very
unhappy with the party and its lack of leadership.
This may have done me in to see a man as honorable as Al Franken railroaded by members of his own party. I just
do not see how they think this is going to gain them anything.
I am looking at France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal as options for a 66 year old retired woman. What about you?

(60,010 posts)We have friends who almost accidentally extended a trip to Mexico into a permanent home, back in the early 1980's. They say they have seen very little here in the USA to make them want to return.
Low cost of living is one reason.
If I could move, I would, but not before looking up other places in detail, esp. for us of the boomer generation, who will be collecting Soc. Sec.

(1,606 posts)I think others need to realize that this final "welcome to fascism" moment was the last straw for MANY.
I realize that many have already left and may be here "in spirit" but at least, for now, we can rant and rave a bit online (until net neutrality is killed, soon.)
I have been here since 2001 but this is a new username, so I can relate to your feelings. At this point it really is a death knell for democracy in general - really a shame. Unforgivable behavior with the lynch mob mentality, over flimsy at best accusations.
Maybe stick around awhile longer, we can have a going away party. There'll be nachos and drinks in the lounge?? lol
