Civics, abortion, Sunday alcohol priorities for local legislators

MONTGOMERY — Repealing a 2016 bill that took money from Lawrence County Schools and other entities is a priority in 2017 for one local senator.

While prisons and the state General Fund budget will be the big issues in the legislative session that starts Tuesday, area lawmakers have some goals and bills of their own.

For Sen. Paul Bussman, R-Cullman, it’s repealing 2016’s House Bill 24. That bill changed how the county revenue commissioner’s office is funded, taking some burden off the county and distributing it among agencies that receive tax dollars. For the school system, that amounted to a loss of about $220,000 this year. The county hospital and municipalities were also impacted.

Bussman said last week he knows other lawmakers in the Lawrence County delegation are working on a compromise bill, but he’s not certain he can support that.
