Alabama gambling bill could add 2 more casinos; Senate vote pushed back

An Alabama gambling bill will wait for a vote while the sponsor works on a bill spelling out the use of gambling revenue.

Sen. Del Marsh, R-Anniston, also said Tuesday he was “looking at” expanding the authorized casino facilities in the legislation from five to seven, based on the current number of congressional districts in the state.

“I still think it’s a tight enough number,” Marsh said at a press conference. “But it seems to come to the wishes of the public of what they would like to see in terms of creating some opportunity, besides those who have been in the gaming business.”

The bill, a constitutional amendment that would need the approval of state voters, would establish a state lottery. It would also allow slot machines and table games at five sites in the state — VictoryLand in Macon County; GreeneTrack in Greene County; the Birmingham Race Course; the Mobile Greyhound Track, and a site in DeKalb or Jackson counties, operated by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.
