Nader's Maine election lawsuit reinstated
Source: Portland Press Herald
PORTLAND The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has reinstated a 2009 lawsuit filed by former independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader and his 2004 Maine electors against the Democratic Party and several of its allies.
Nader's lawsuit, which was originally filed in Washington County Superior Court, was dismissed in November 2010. But on Friday, the supreme court threw out that dismissal, ruling that the lower court erred by denying Nader and his electors an opportunity to establish their claims.
The longtime consumer advocate claimed that Democratic leaders orchestrated a nationwide effort to interfere with his campaign by filing 29 complaints in 19 states, including Maine. His suit said many of the complaints included false allegations of fraud.

This was originally filed in Maine after the statute of limitations expired in DC. I thought this was over and done with.

(53,661 posts)Did a number on restricting candidates in the primaries. Either to guarantee less choice or please the GOP owned media. I think a little bit of both.
I also fault Edwards and Clinton in this after I saw a video when they were caught on open microphones wanting to get rid of the 'minor' candidates to save time or something. I thought that was unseemly.
We haven't had a good presidential primary debate discussing issues important to many Americans since the 2000 primaries.
We need to restore the Fairness Doctrine and have someone less partial than the talking heads of the corporate media moderating the debate. Some group like the League of Women Voters managing these so we can hear all the idea and candidates we can.

(1,361 posts)1. Gore was a weak candidate. Who WANTED to vote for him? He was so uninspiring that I found it difficult to get off my chair and walk the quarter mile to my poling place and push the lever. The only reason I did was against Bush.
2. We need third party candidates. This year's rubber-stamp primary is without the benefit of having Dennis or the Pentagon Paper hero, Gravel to give opposing views. We need to be reminded that there really is something to hope and dream about. And it ain't coming from Obama.
3. We need to hear all points of view and be able to vote for or against them. In essence, that is what Jefferson said in his views about free press. In Maine, we didn't get that chance.
I hope Nader sticks around.
Go on Netflix and rent "An Unreasonable Man." Then reply to this post.

(16,982 posts)Third party candidates only split the vote and give us the George W. Bushes, the Ronald Reagans.
National elections are not about your feelings, jerseyjack, they're about the direction the country takes and the policies put into place by an administration and the legislation passed and signed into law. Third parties aren't doing all that for us, and you'd have to have ignored the events of the past two centuries to claim they were.

After Gore bailed out of the recount process, for unknown reason, once the recount was completed, and after the supreme court unconstitutionally proclaims george w. moron* president, it was found, via the actual recount that Gore won.
But don't let that fact interfere with a good rant.
I'm done. This ridiculous topic pops up from time to time on DU, with people blaming nader for this and that. The fact is, Gore won, he just chose not to persue a legal challenge and as a result we got moron*.
while nader did attract 3rd party votes, this is nothing to say that those votes would have gone to Gore or would have gone to moron*. No one knows.
But the fact remains, once the counts were properly completed, Gore won.
Which means, that while nader was some what a spoiler, he didn't lose the race for Gore. Gore lost the race for Gore.

(1,374 posts)Nader lost all credibility when he ran a campaign based on lies. He lied, he lied, he lied. And too many people believed him. They are all responsible for what happened. Nader's legacy includes W's legacy as president. Nader lied.

(6,670 posts)The only effect the spoiler effect is a LEGITIMATE cause of is campaigning to fix our election system so that it no longer happens.
The very IDEA of threatening people in your own party that if they vote for what they want, they'll get the opposite - when that is true because of the corruption of your election system - is, in itself, pretty damned offensive wherever and however it happens.
