Egyptian officials say they have scrapped an agreement to supply Israel with natural gas.
Israel received around 40% of its gas supplies from Egypt and uses it to generate electricity.
The announcement comes after the cross-border pipeline suffered numerous sabotage attacks which cut supplies.
Egypt was the first Middle East country to sign a peace accord with Israel, and the energy deal has been a key part of agreements between the two state.

Critics charge that Israel got the gas at below-market prices and that Mubarak cronies skimmed millions of dollars off the proceeds, costing Egypt millions of dollars in lost revenue.

(18,795 posts)Diplomatic officials in Jerusalem Sunday night said that after speaking with their counterparts in Egypt, that the cancellation of a gas deal serving Israel was part of a commercial dispute between private companies and Egyptian government corporations that is presently being adjudicated abroad.
The officials said that this had nothing to do with the status of Egyptian-Israeli diplomatic relations. A senior Egyptian military official was quoted as saying on Egyptian television that the gas deal was not nullified, but rather halted because of a business dispute regarding the transfer of payment.
