Wash. Gov. Prefers Full Repeal Of Controversial Indiana Law

Source: TPM

WASHINGTON — Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D) says he's leaning heavily toward joining local Indiana Democrats calling for a full repeal of a controversial religious freedom law that critics say is a thinly-veiled move to legalize gay discrimination.

Inslee, one of the governors who instituted taxpayer funded-travel bans to Indiana in response to Gov. Mike Pence (R) signing the law, in an interview with TPM on Wednesday, said he wasn't completely sure but full repeal would be his preference for fixing the law. Pence, on Tuesday, said he would push for a clarification of the law. Indiana Democrats, however, have demanded for full repeal of the law as a solution.

"A repeal, to me, seems to be in order, to make clear that the state of Indiana does not allow discrimination," Inslee told TPM. "And there's really no other reason, at least, that necessitated this type of act, except the desire to discriminate against LGBT members. That's what drove this. So it would seem to me a repeal would be in order given how dramatic this was a reversal of the progress we've made against discrimination and in favor of civil rights in this country. I mean that's certainly what I'd recommend."

A similar law was recently under consideration in Arkansas. On Wednesday, Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) said he would send his religious freedom bill back to the state legislature to be reworked. Inslee refrained from saying definitively if he would institute a ban if Hutchison signed his state's religious freedom bill into law.

They've caused more damage to the working-class (and I mean everybody except the "entitled&quot than almost any other special interest group. I believe there are still quite a few corporations that are members of this cesspool.

I admit, I am naïve when it comes to the "why" of anyone needing to be discriminated against for any reason. Do we always have to hate this group or that group of people? - Can't we all just get along....

Inslee "And there's really no other reason, at least, that necessitated this type of act, except the desire to discriminate against LGBT members. That's what drove this. Not just "a thinly-veiled move to legalize gay discrimination" but persecution, exile, criticism, less than full equality seems to me...which group is next...?

I'm not sure it's such a good idea. It's like when the US puts economic sanctions on other countries. It's the cruelest form of warfare, because it attacks the whole population indiscriminately. Why should all Indianans suffer for the legislation passed and supported by reactionaries?

So believers don't want to facilitate anything abominable by serving gays in their abominable restaurants. That's the case for calling this a "religious freedom" act. It's not entirely without merit. Of course, it's also a sneaky selling point, like calling union busting legislation a "right to work" law.

I don't think anybody going to be too upset if the politicians reach for a fig leaf and just simply remove the language that gives bigots the right to discriminate.

The truth is that freedom of religion has never been in question and the Indiana law was never about restoring any lost freedom.

This is a case in point. Make a law for a special interest few, then write more words to mean what it didn't mean, instead of just deletion. Let's confuse and confound as best we can.

Just delete the bad law, makes more sense.
