After Kentucky's loss, fires, fights and arrests on State Street
Source: Lexington Herald-Leader
Thousands of Kentucky fans shared the suspense, and then the grief, of Saturday night's game after cramming into bars, yards and viewing parties at the Kentucky Theatre and other locations.
On State Street, which had been the epicenter of previous post-game celebrations, downcast expressions and stunned silence quickly gave way to chants of " expletive) Wisconsin."
Bottles were thrown into the air and fires were set and quickly extinguished by firefighters, who asked for police escorts into the rowdy crowd.
There were several reports of assaults, and fights, and reports of people with minor injuries, such as facial lacerations, a head injury and a foot injury from broken glass.

(50,783 posts)Eastern Kentucky and the dry counties. Now eastern Kentucky may not be their fault as they are trying to exist. Dry counties I would not give them any excuse as they are likely packed with religious nutbaggers.

(12,723 posts)What with being poor and downtrodden by elitist assholes with shitty attitudes. But a few of them did make it out and some of us prospered and are proud of our roots. I doubt many of those college students who rioted were true sons of the soil but I guess a lazy broad brush stereotypical slur is about all you can be bothered to muster.

I don't blame him a bit for being upset over the loss, especially right after such a huge loss.
I would expect other teams (and fans) to react the same way (and they do).
It was a hard loss for a great team.
There were some terrible foul calls, but that is not what effected the outcome.
Wisconsin did a great job out hustling UK and maintained good discipline throughout.
UK held it together until the last four minutes and then fell apart.
From a UK fan, Congrats Wisconsin.

(1,151 posts)Being a poor person I did not get to watch the game as I do not pay 80 dollars a month for some assinine cable tv package. I was hoping for Wis. just because I dont approve of the one and done J Calipari model. I think its wrong to award scholarships to people who are not students.
I think that poor sportmanship especially great athletes just shows me that the coach has failed to do his job. I hope there is consequences for that coach.
He should apologize to Wisconsin. The player who acted bad will be punished I am sure by that same coach, who is ultimately responsible.

(3,622 posts)Early Kentucky history was built on slave labor, and it was an integral part of the state's economy. From 1790 to 1860, the slave population of Kentucky was never more than one-quarter of the total population. Kentucky did not abolish slavery during the Civil War, as did the border states of Maryland and Missouri. However, during the war, about 75% of slaves in Kentucky were freed or escaped to Union lines. Slavery legally ended on December 18, 1865(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_slavery_in_Kentucky).
Kentucky may not have been a Confederate State but the residents did not seem to want to give up their slaves. As it was during slavery, racism in Kentucky is a major issue today, as it is in the rest of the country.

Wisconsin is not a fluke -- no superstars, just hard-working teamwork.
Kentucky, on the other hand, has a roster full of NBA first-round draft choices. Maybe too many of them were counting their NBA bonus checks and not taking care of business.
Did you go to the links in the OP? Check out the pics. Mostly white faces. Why didn't the cops shot, taze, and mace a few of 'em?

(9,350 posts)Since they are not black very few people will make a big deal about their actions. Very few people will call this a riot. Very few people will denigrate their entire race because of their actions. Very few people will claim these kids were raised wrong by their parents. Very few people will claim this is proof that there should be a large police presence in their community and reason why police should use extreme force when confronted by these people.

(86,330 posts)This is the acceptable way to display poor sportsmanship these days and as long as they are white-skinned, there will be few, if any, real consequences for them to endure.
They LOST and will have to get over it or their dismay will fester into yet another social ill on a personal level and perpetuate a social ill that already exists and needs to be done away with.

Sports are out of control in this country, and I do mean that the pro sports establishment goes to great lengths to make sure that Mr. and Ms. Average American think that pro sports are earthshakingly significant, so important that entire channels are devoted to them and 1/3 of the average local newscast and 1/4 of the average newspaper.
