Fracking: Oil company drops lawsuit attempting to overturn San Benito County ban

One month after mounting a legal challenge to San Benito County's ban on the controversial oil exploration practice of fracking, a Southern California oil company has withdrawn its lawsuit.

The decision now means that none of the local bans on fracking in California is under legal challenge, environmentalists said Monday, even as several more counties -- including Santa Clara, Monterey and Butte -- may see similar bans on next year's ballots.

"So much for the oil industry's empty threats against communities that fight fracking pollution," said Hollin Kretzmann, an attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental group. "With frivolous lawsuits off the table, more California communities will use their authority to ban fracking and protect their water, air and health."

We're at a oil glut at this time, and oil prices will remain low.
