Gov. Jindal Backing Broad Anti-Gay Religious Freedom Bill

Source: TPM/The New Orleans Times-Picayune

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) is throwing his support behind a religious freedom bill that's broader in many ways than the controversial one in Indiana that Gov. Mike Pence (R) was forced to clarify after a national uproar.

"Yes, we support the bill," Jindal spokeswoman Shannon Bates Dirmann said according to The New Orleans Times-Picayune. "This is a common sense bill that provides necessary protections for individuals to prevent adverse treatment from the state based on religious beliefs regarding marriage."

The bill, introduced by Louisiana state Rep. Mike Johnson, allows businesses to refuse to recognize same-sex marriage. It also would allow a private company to not offer benefits to same-sex married couples based on religious objections.

Jindal's support for this bill falls in line with him backing the Indiana bill and similar legislation in Arkansas, which Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) sent back to the state legislature to better reflect a federal religious freedom law passed in 1993.

need a scapegoat? First they came for the labor unions, then it was the gays and gypsies and then the Jews (liberals) and then it was--------------- Holy crap they act like German National Socialists in the 30s and 40s.
The only things missing are the snappy uniforms and the hooked cross.

NO will die if the conventions are pulled. Jindal is just another Repug inbred idiot, obviously didn't mean a thing he said about Repugs being the party of "stupid". Guess he has to personally demonstrate just how stupid they really are.

http://senate.la.gov/Documents/Constitution/Article1.htm#%C2%A78.%20Freedom%20of%20Religion
§8. Freedom of Religion

Section 8. No law shall be enacted respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

It also seems like it would violate the Right to individual dignity,

§3. Right to Individual Dignity

Section 3. No person shall be denied the equal protection of the laws. No law shall discriminate against a person because of race or religious ideas, beliefs, or affiliations. No law shall arbitrarily, capriciously, or unreasonably discriminate against a person because of birth, age, sex, culture, physical condition, or political ideas or affiliations. Slavery and involuntary servitude are prohibited, except in the latter case as punishment for crime.

If it were to be passed, it doesn't seem like it would be upheld on challenge.

Because there is no way in hell I will step one foot in that state again while that law is in place. Jindal has turned an amazing state into an embarrassment.

I hope the next governor can undo the damage and bring back the greatness that was one Louisiana.
