Chile: Pinochet’s Will to Be Opened
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: April 25, 2012

Chilean officials will open the last will and testament of Gen. Augusto Pinochet on Wednesday, a crucial step in determining just how large his fortune was. A study ordered by Chile’s Supreme Court determined years ago that the general accumulated $21 million before his death in 2006 at age 91 and said only $3 million of that was justified by his military salary. He died under house arrest, facing charges of illegal enrichment and human rights violations.

Chile's Pinochet still guards his secrets: Opened testament reveals nothing about fortune

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — There's disappointment in Chile among those hoping a long-secret will left by Gen. Augusto Pinochet would help the government recover some of the millions of dollars he allegedly stole from the state before his death in 2006.

The dictator's final will was unsealed by a court on Wednesday, but it gave no clues to the size or whereabouts of his fortune. Attorney Alvaro Quintanilla told reporters that it only changed the name of the estate's executor. So now he'll turn his attention to an earlier Pinochet will from the year 2000 that is still sealed.

Quintanilla represents an independent government agency that protects the interests of the state. He plans to try to persuade the courts to open Pinochet's earlier will in hopes of finding the money.

Chile to open last will and testament of General Pinochet to see whether he stole from state to amass £15m fortune

Chile plans to open the last will of the late General Pinochet in a bid to determine whether he diverted public funds before his death to amass his £15m fortune.

The will, which was apparently prepared shortly before his death in 2006 at age 91, has remained under seal since then, and the Pinochet family wanted it to stay that way.

The opening was requested by Chile's Defense Council of the State, which is seeking to recover funds from Augusto Pinochet's estate.

His oldest daughter, Lucia Pinochet, said the order to open the document amounts to 'political persecution' in an interview with the newspaper La Segunda.
