New Jersey gay therapy ban is upheld over boy's challenge

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Monday rejected a fresh challenge to New Jersey's ban on so-called gay conversion therapy for minors, saying the prohibition does not violate the rights of either children or their parents.
By a 3-0 vote, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the ban did not infringe the First Amendment rights of minors and their parents to receive information and exercise religion, or the rights of parents to decide how to raise their children.
The challenge came from a 15-year-old boy known as John Doe, who claimed to suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, self-hatred and suicidal thoughts as he struggled with his sexual identity, and his parents, who said they had sincere religious beliefs that homosexuality was sinful and harmful.

(16,844 posts)to abuse their children in the name of religion, at least according to this judge.
It's unclear to me exactly who is suing who in this case, however. The article says that the family plans to appeal the case to the Supreme Court, but it appears to me that the parents won the case. Shouldn't the boy's attorney be making an appeal? I'm confused.

(16,844 posts)If I were the kid, I would be suing the parents for damages, but the article says nothing about that. It's an interesting case, but not a very good article.

(714 posts)Because it seems to me that the bias is always on the side that says "A parent can do anything to their children that they choose." Killing kids with "faith healing"? Just once, the state will step in around the second or third death. Using the home school system to deny you kids an education because it might make them question the religion you push on them? Sure, why not.
But don't you dare tell someone how to raise their children. Just shut up, and accept whatever adult stumbles into the world on their 18th birthday.

(16,844 posts)their kids are their property. Sure, parents are responsible for what their kids do and they can get into a lot of trouble if they don't look after their kids properly. But gay conversion therapy is nothing but child abuse, pure and simple.
There are still a lot of runaway kids whose parents won't accept them for being gay. Many of them get involved in prostitution and drugs while living on the street. They would rather live like that than be abused by parents who won't accept them for who they are.
It's disgusting what some religions do to people, and something has to be done to help these poor kids have a chance in life. Laws against conversion therapy are a positive step forward. I just hope this damned SCOTUS we have doesn't strike down that law.

(5,739 posts)Cause: his parents, who said they had sincere religious beliefs that homosexuality was sinful and harmful.
Effect: The challenge came from a 15-year-old boy known as John Doe, who claimed to suffer from anxiety, panic attacks, self-hatred and suicidal thoughts as he struggled with his sexual identity.
The boy doesn't need therapy that won't work to try and change his sexuality, which he can't. What he needs is actually therapy to help him accept himself and his parents need a major attitude adjustment.
Sadly, they'll just go across state lines to get to get some witch-doctor "therapist" to get the kid to yell about his father and beat a pillow with a tennis racket. The kid will proceed to be fucked up by and and struggle with his sexuality probably for his entire life. His parents can also get the false sense of mind that they "cured" their child of something that wasn't even a problem in the first. Well honestly it wasn't a problem until they made it one and it is going to be a problem for likely their child's entire life, because THEY couldn't get over the fact they produced a boy who likes boys.
