R&B singer Percy Sledge dies at 73

Source: CNN

Legendary R&B singer Percy Sledge has died at the age of 73, CNN has confirmed.

The crooner, best known for his classic song "When a Man Loves a Woman," passed away Tuesday morning in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The cause of death was not immediately available.

"Woman" was a massive hit, topping the charts in 1966 and appearing on numerous movie soundtracks. It was later covered by Michael Bolton, whose 1991 version also hit No. 1.

In 1987, Sledge's original single was reissued and made the top 10 in the UK.

"Woman" was one of the most soulful ballads of its time. Does anyone know if it was backed by Booker T and the MGs at Stax/Atlantic?

And the backing band is the Muscle Shoals house band, AKA the Swampers (They are referenced in Sweet Home Alabama).

Fame's Rick Hall, friend and part-time partner of Quin, helped promote it by making the Jerry Wexler connection, and could rightfully be credited with launching Percy Sledge's career.

There aren't any artists like him anymore and that's a shame.

is that the first time you hear it, you are enthralled by every word as the ambiance the song generates grabs your heart and holds onto it. The second time you hear the song is just as enthralling as if you had never heard it. And so it goes every single time the rest of your life you hear that performer sing that song. And that is what this song has done for me.

Goodnight, Mr. Sledge, many of us will never forget your music and will always remember the great pleasure your songs gave us.

Sam

...of the great ones gone. They seem to be leaving more us more rapidly these days...

From the esteemed Righteous Brothers:
"...If you believe in forever, then life is just a one-night stand;
If there's a rock and roll heaven, well you know they've got a helluva band, band, band..."

RIP, Percy.
