Nebraska lawmakers want more study before oil wastewater disposal well is approved

LINCOLN — Several Nebraska lawmakers asked a state commission Tuesday to delay approval of a controversial oil wastewater disposal well in Sioux County until after a legislative study is completed this summer.

The issue came up Tuesday before the Nebraska Legislature voted to confirm the appointment of petroleum geologist John Rundel to the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

Sen. John Stinner of Gering, whose district is near the proposed well, wants to explore if Nebraska’s regulation of oil field wastewater wells is adequate to protect groundwater and whether the regulatory authority over such wells should rest with the commission. He has proposed a resolution to have the Legislature’s Natural Resources Committee study the issue between sessions.

Stinner and Sen. Ken Haar of Malcolm asked the commission to delay approval of a project that would inject water collected during oil and natural gas production deep underground using an inactive oil well in northwest Nebraska.
