Senate Dems ready bill freezing student loan costs

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is playing politics with his push to prevent interest rates on federal student loans from increasing in an election-year effort to embarrass Republicans, the Senate's GOP leader said Wednesday.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., aimed his remarks at Obama as the president spent a second day addressing college campus audiences about the need to keep today's 3.4 percent interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans from doubling July 1.

Obama was scheduled Wednesday to visit the University of Iowa.

The president supports a bill introduced late Tuesday by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., that would keep the rate at 3.4 percent for another year, helping 7.4 million people. The $5.9 billion measure would be paid for by boosting payroll taxes on the owners of some privately held corporations, which Republicans oppose.

"Let's be honest," McConnell said on the Senate floor. "The only reason Democrats have proposed this particular solution to the problem is to get Republicans to oppose it, to make us cast a vote they think will make us look bad to the voters they need to win the next election."

"Let's be honest," McConnell said on the Senate floor. "The only reason Democrats have proposed this particular solution to the problem is to get Republicans to oppose it, to make us cast a vote they think will make us look bad to the voters they need to win the next election."

This says more about the Republican party than the Democratic party Senator McConnell. The Dems know that any bill they get behind will be opposed as long as it helps people, so it's a win win, they get to help people and expose Republicans for being dipshits at the same time.

everything is political for them. Power, money, profits are the only thing the goppers care about, f**k everything or everyone else.

They are so f**king desperate that even they know things look truly bad for them for November 2012 thats why the fearmongering is the only thing they have left, besides the Oh Obama is not American, he was not born here just because BS.

And many of the goppers claim they are Christian? I beg to differ.

BY THEIR ACTIONS YOU SHALL KNOW THEM

Anyone can "claim" to be a christian, what Jesus was saying is it's not making the "claim" that makes them christians, it's what they do, their actions that prove or disprove their "claim". I know a lot of people who make the "claim" they are christians, but they lie, cheat on their taxes, cheat on their spouse, and break most of the laws from the bible they are supposed to uphold as christians, and the majority of these people are republicans!

The way republicans "act" in congress, doing the will of the rich and to hell with the rest of the country is NOT how Jesus said things should be. So Mitch can bitch all he wants, but what he and his band of crocks have been doing to this country is far, far from christian.

If it raises the costs for the poor and middle class without raising "taxes", it's all on the up and up and Americans sit back in their recliners in front of the teevee and say "Oh, okay".

Lets put this the right at their feet and let them trip over it.

The idea of a branch of Government offering or blocking any legislation purely for the purpose of achieving political objectives, cheapens both that branch and Democracy as a whole.

I am certain you agree.
