Kennedy will present at The Explorers Club, the famed NYC center for adventurers, scientists and conservationists, along with Julio Fiol, Chile's Consul General in NYC, and international supporters of conservation in Patagonia

New York, New York (PRWEB) April 16, 2015

Futaleufú Riverkeeper, a Chilean non-profit and member of the New York-based Waterkeeper Alliance, celebrates the launch of its campaign to permanently protect the threatened Futaleufú River, in Chile's Patagonia, with two New York City events.

On Thursday, April 16, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. will present at The Explorers Club, the famed center for adventurers, scientists and conservationists. On Friday, April 17, the team from Chile will be at the Patagonia Meatpacking store from 12- 7 pm.

The Thursday event will feature Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., President of Waterkeeper Alliance, Chilean Consul General Julio Fiol, whitewater pioneers Robert Currie Sr. and Eric Hertz, and other notable international supporters of conservation efforts in Patagonia.

“Communities all over Latin America are watching their rivers be destroyed by energy companies and mines and unchecked agricultural growth,” said Kennedy. “The fight to protect the Futaleufú watershed is emblematic of the larger struggle to defend these communities and promote sustainable development.”

The rushing and powerful Futaleufú River is one of Patagonia’s natural wonders and a center for first-class kayaking and adventure tourism. However, Chile’s mining sector is thirsty for energy, putting this river at risk for dam construction.

“This event marks a historic moment for protecting the Futaleufú,” said Robert Currie, founder and executive director of Futaleufú Riverkeeper.

"It shows how the international community is coming together to support the desires of the Chilean people who want to protect their natural resources for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations," said Currie.

I hope Kennedy's involvement can help the people of Chile who have been working against this so hard. It's irreplaceable.

“To get the gold, they will have to kill every one of us”

The most-storied warrior tribe in Ecuador prepares to fight as the government sells gold-laden land to China

Alexander Zaitchik - Feb 10, 2013

There are so many pictures at this link about the crime being done to the Earth there, and the people there. The president of the country has sold them out to China and Canada.

I don't know what will happen in Patagaonia. The Salon link has no updates so I don't know. This is such an important area and these people need help. The government is going full steam ahead and not listening to the native people there.

These people don't need the gold, world industries want the gold for profit and products. The story goes into past deceptions and the current arrogance. I hope the river down in Patagonia is saved, but not hopeful.

The biosphere is being taken down by those who claim to be smart, but really aren't. The native people are always 'the canary in the coal mine' as we were taught by the OCAW, until Reagan's cultural revolution changed the minds of people about unions, dealing in bigotry as this story at Salon explains being used there.

Social justice is important because it divides the people, rewarding some while devastating others. Please go to the link to see the full story, it's an eye opener and heartbreaking.

I couldn't decide what part needed to be posted as it was all valuable to how the 'first world' is devastating the 'third world'. (Not sure those terms mean anything anymore):
