Nebraska wastewater well gets approval, but its future remains uncertain

Source: Omaha World Herald

By David Hendee

SIDNEY, Neb. — A Colorado energy company won approval Wednesday to create a controversial commercial disposal well in northwest Nebraska for discarding water from oil and natural gas production.

Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission authorization means Terex Energy Corp. can move ahead with converting an inactive oil well in Sioux County to accept oil-field wastewater.

Terex, however, may not immediately develop the site north of Mitchell because a production slowdown in nearby Colorado and Wyoming has reduced the need for a new well in the region, a company official said.

"A lot has changed since we put the application in. We’ll have to evaluate it,’’ said Allen Heim, vice president of operations for the Broomfield, Colorado-based company.
