Deadly DNP diet pills warning: Interpol issues global alert over 'imminent threat' by slimming drug

Source: The Independent

The world police agency Interpol has issued a global health warning over the threat posed by deadly “diet pills” which can cause the taker to overheat and “literally cook” from the inside.

The drug, known as DNP, has been linked to the death of British woman Eloise Parry in recent weeks and has also left a French man critically ill in hospital.

DNP was first used in France in the First World War in the manufacture of explosives, but was found to dramatically increase metabolism and caused significant weight loss among bomb factory workers.

It was later marketed as a diet pill, until the discovery of a wide range of damaging side-effects saw it outlawed for human consumption in the late 1930s.

That's pretty crazy. I wonder how much he took.

The other death was a result, however, of the woman taking six times the lethal dose. I'm not doubting that the drug is inherently dangerous, but context is important, as well.

He briefly put himself in the hospital using this and diuretics.

I understand this stuff is actually an insecticide.

Not a terribly employable fellow. I'm all for working out (and still lift real free weights myself at my age), but too much is too much.

It's actually a chemical intermediate: they make dyes, herbicides and explosives out of it.
