Canada frees Omar Khadr, once Guantánamo Bay's youngest inmate
Source: The Guardian
After 12 years and nine months a man who was taken to Guantánamo Bay at 15 years old has been granted bail, defeating an attempt by Canadas conservative government to keep Omar Khadr in prison.
Mr Khadr, you are free to go, said Justice Myra Bielby.
Khadr was silent in the Edmonton court though he flashed a smile to his applauding supporters.

Bielby declined a stay request of a lower court judges decision to grant Khadr bail while he appeals against his US war crimes conviction.

Seems like you have to go to Canada for unadulterated, independent justice these days.

(748 posts)The federal government spent quite a lot of time avoiding this - not demanding he be sent home from gitmo, then appealing every possible way to keep him in jail.

(21,088 posts)The Canadian government's behaviour in this case has been appalling!
But then, it seems that when the Harper government goes up against the courts they lose the big ones. A Supreme Court nomination, the prostitution law, and now Khadr.

(8,646 posts)Harper tried to keep him behind bars, pulling every dirty trick he could. Thankfully, our justice system worked. Good luck to Mr. Khadr in his new life.
