Vermont Republican senator to face sexual assault charges
Source: AP
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) A Republican state senator who's one of the Legislature's most outspoken conservatives was arrested Thursday and will face charges of sexual assault, human trafficking and prohibited acts, state police said.
Norman McAllister, who's in his second two-year Senate term representing Franklin County, is to be arraigned Friday, police said in a statement without elaborating on the allegations against him.
McAllister was held Thursday night at a jail in St. Albans on $20,000 bail, said police, who had no further comment on the case before the release of an affidavit of probable cause at Friday's court hearing. He couldn't be contacted in jail, and a voice message left at his home drew no immediate response.
The case was investigated by the Northwest Unit for Special Investigations, a law enforcement team that investigates sex crimes and child abuse.

(7,006 posts)Sen. Norman McAllister, a Republican representing most of Franklin County, has been charged with sexual assault, human trafficking and prohibited acts, the Burlington Free Press reported. He got cuffed inside the Statehouse in Montpelier by plainclothes state detectives during a break in a legislative debate.
Little information has been released about the charges, and its unclear what relationship the women had to the senator or how their alleged arrangement worked. McAllister has yet to comment on the case and most of the states top officials, including Gov. Peter Shumlin, declined to publicly comment as well. A call to McAllister's home number from the Daily News was not returned.

(277 posts)If a pimp brings his prostitute over a state line, and money is exchanged, the charge is Human Trafficking. It is a felony and can bring 20 years. Many cities borders state lines, like NYC, going across a state line might be only 10 miles away.
It sounds like this Repug State Senator has rental property outside of Vermont, and was enticing the girls to come over to Vermont. Or maybe the other way around. Soliciting Prostitution is not automatically Human Trafficking, so it sounds like there are more serious issues going on... which means this guy might be going to jail for a long time.

A sworn police statement outlining the allegations in more detail would be withheld until after the arraignment Friday, the state police said.

ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) A Vermont state senator pleaded not guilty Friday to charges he tried to extract sexual favors in exchange for rent, used sex as a punishment and told a woman they could both earn extra money if she had sex with farmworkers.

McAllister is charged with three counts each of sexual assault and prohibited acts. Police had initially recommended a human trafficking charge, but prosecutors said the accusations didn't match the spirit of that law.
