Google acknowledges 11 accidents with its self-driving cars

By JUSTIN PRITCHARD

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Google Inc. revealed Monday that its self-driving cars have been in 11 minor traffic accidents since it began experimenting with the technology six years ago.

The company released the number after The Associated Press reported that Google had notified California of three collisions involving its self-driving cars since September, when reporting all accidents became a legal requirement as part of the permits for the tests on public roads.

The director of Google's self-driving car project wrote in a web post that all 11 accidents were minor — "light damage, no injuries" — and happened over 1.7 million miles of testing, including nearly 1 million miles in self-driving mode.

"Not once was the self-driving car the cause of the accident," wrote Google's Chris Urmson.

3. As article points out, accidents NOT caused by the driverless car.

Title is somewhat misleading. I look forward to the day when driverless cars will lessen out insurance premiums.

it has been because some idiot on a cell phone ran into us. Stop light? Can't bother stopping because the conversation was too interesting. Used blinkers to signal using the turn lane? Just plow right into the car with that tow truck because the phone was more compelling than keeping your eyes on the road.

Just pile right into someone in a 20mph zone because fussing with whoever you were in a fight with on the phone wasn't bad enough.

Honk if you love Jesus; text if you want to meet him sooner.

8. 'Safer than human drivers' is not much of a goal. Very corporate.

It's alarming that the goal isn't 'zero accidents.'

14. Why not? Safer than human drivers is by definition better than the current situation.

If it's even slightly better, lives and money will be saved.

"Zero accidents" is a perfect example of letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.
