An outbreak of bird flu that has already devastated flocks of millions of chickens and turkeys in the Upper Midwest has been confirmed in northeast Nebraska, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The USDA on Tuesday said a flock of 1.7 million chickens in Dixon County has been quarantined and will be killed.
The virulent strain of avian influenza has decimated flocks of chickens and turkeys in Iowa, the top egg-producing state that had more than 58.3 million hens as of the USDAs most recent count. Iowa officials said Tuesday that four more farms tested positive for bird flu.
Nebraska is the No. 10 egg-producing state with about 9.45 million hens.
