New Detroit-Windsor bridge named after Gordie Howe

Source: Detroit News

Mr. Hockey is about to become Mr. Bridge.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Gov. Rick Snyder will announce Thursday afternoon that a long-planned Detroit River bridge crossing will be named after Detroit Red Wings great and Canadian native Gordie Howe, an official briefed on the announcement said.

The 87-year-old is one of the greatest hockey players in history, but it is unusual for a Canadian landmark to be named after a living person.

Howe retired 33 years after his first season — and during five decades "he didn't just survive, he was dominant — on the scoring lists, in battles in the corners, on game-winning goals and when the year-end awards were handed out," his Hall of Fame biography reads. "He was a big man, though by modern standards no behemoth, but what set him apart was his incredible strength." . . .

Always a class act, and next to Al Kaline, this Detroiter's favorite sports person ever (Barry and Joe Louis in the mix). In a time when we hear mostly bad news on DU and elsewhere, this is one to celebrate. Gordie is still with us, a miracle in itself, and I grew up looking south to Windsor, and doesn't the Gordie Howe International Bridge have a nice ring to it, for both our nations?

Can make an argument there. But third, after Bobby Orr? Bobby was great, too, but no way better than Gordie.

And isn't this great, too have a bridge named after him?

I'm gonna go with Gretzky then Gordie Howe. I like Bobby Orr, but he's a half step behind those two.

Yes, a Gordie Howe Hat Trick (a goal, an assist, and a fight) is an unofficial stat, but it is still cool.

What a great link between the U.S. and Canada. With all that is going on, what a wonderful decision.
