Texas obtains new supply of pentobarbital for execution use

HOUSTON (AP) — Texas prison officials say they've obtained a new supply of drugs that will allow them to carry out the two executions currently scheduled.

The execution earlier this week of Derrick Dewayne Charles left the Texas Department of Criminal Justice with enough pentobarbital to accommodate only the scheduled June 3 lethal injection of prisoner Lester Bower.

Another inmate, Gregory Russeau, is set to die June 15.

Agency spokesman Jason Clark wouldn't say Thursday how much new pentobarbital has been obtained or identify the source, other than it came from a licensed compounding pharmacy. Drugs for execution use nationwide have become difficult to obtain because manufacturers are refusing to sell them.
