B.B. King dies at 89, attorney says

Jerry Shriver and Steve Jones, USA Today

B.B. King spread joy to millions by giving them the blues.

The iconic musician, along with his ever-present guitar Lucille, spent nearly 70 years thrilling audiences and spreading the music he learned as a poverty-stricken youth in the Mississippi Delta all over the world.

King, 89, died in Las Vegas, his attorney announced late Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

"Blues is a tonic for whatever ails you," King told USA TODAY in 2005. "I could play the blues and then not be blue anymore.''
The same could be said of those who heard him play. No matter how stormy the tale he'd weave, by the time he was through, the clouds had parted.

RIP, Mr. King. You were indeed, the KING.

He left behind a legacy of great music, and a ton of kids, too, who will no doubt miss their pops.

I saw B.B. King live so many years ago. One of the best concerts ever in my life.

The whole crowd got so so deep into the blues with B.B., Lucille and his awesome band. A night I will never forget.

Rest in peace Mr King. Your legacy, your music will live forever.

My father introduced me to all the greats, and I saw him in concert I don't know how many times.

Today we lost one of those last great bluesmen.

RIP B.B. King.

I fell in love with Blues because of BB King and the channel 70 Bluesville on Satellite radio. I LOVE IT! His collabs over th years have been amazing as well...some greats like Eric Clapton, Elton John, U2, Bonnie Raitt, Brad Paisly, Willie Nelson, and many more. RIP KING!

He was unbelievably kind. I was at his concert at the Salle Pleyel with a group of local musicians (seven of us) including two black guys from Djibouti who had an outrageously gorgeous sister. When B.B. saw their sister back stage, it looked like the eyes would pop out of his head she was so beautiful and I spent a few minutes translating his questions to her. B.B. was a nice guy, let some of us guitarists take a few strums on his red Gibson ES 335 he called "Lucille", and gave each of us an autograph and one of his guitar picks (Fender "heavy" - I still have them in an envelope at home). A year later when I returned to the States to spend a year in Oakland, California, I walked past Mr. "Blues Boy" , B.B. in a music store and he did a double take. I shook his hand again. He was a great guy, completely without ego it seems, and very down to Earth and kind.

If there is an afterlife, may he find the heaven he richly deserved.
