Wages paid to illegal immigrants will be confiscated by the police, says David Cameron

Source: The Independent

The wages paid to illegal migrants working in the shadow economy will be confiscated by police as part of a fresh drive by David Cameron to push down immigration.

He will announce that a major Immigration Bill in next week’s Queen’s Speech will include moves to prosecute firms which only advertise abroad for staff and to accelerate the deportation of illegal immigrants.

The Bill will create a new criminal offence of illegal working, which will apply to migrants who have come to Britain illegally as well as those who have overstayed their leave.

... Mr Cameron will say: “The truth is it has been too easy to work illegally and employ illegal workers here. So we’ll take a radical step – we’ll make illegal working a criminal offence in its own right. That means wages paid to illegal migrants will be seized as proceeds of crime and businesses will be told when their workers’ visas expire. So if you’re involved in illegal working – employer or employee – you’re breaking the law.”

So these people entered the Country illegally (failure on the part of border security/patrol that they were able to do so to begin with) then were likely given really awful jobs for which they were likely paid very poorly. So Mr. Cameron's solution is to seize their money - and, do what with it, exactly?

You know, as someone who works in a job in the service industry, I work pretty damned hard. I know a whole lot of people who work really damned hard - and whether or not they were illegal immigrants, I would say that their pay - their earned money, is something that ought to be sacred and basically untouchable. Deportation is one thing - but to rob people of money that they have actually earned through hard work... and to do it in this way, is sickening.

Regardless of where this sort of thing is done... it's sickening.

You want fewer illegals coming in? There are ways to accomplish this - improved border security, more sane and reasonable pathways to citizenship.

One thing I have never understood - we have a whole lot of work in Most Countries that needs doing, such as volunteer work, whether it be helping out in hospitals, cleaning up streets, repairing old infrastructure... whatever. Why don't we simply build halfway houses where these folks can live (while providing simple necessities) - and give them the option to earn citizenship through a certain amount of volunteer work? That would prove their dedication and willingness to work, while offering them a home to live in - security and relative peace.

We'd get something out of it, they'd get something out of it. In the end, they could become citizens and seek out whatever jobs they wanted, and maybe there'd be less need to have all these debates and all of these absolutely moronic, despicable little moves by Cameron and his ilk.

What a bloody ass he is. Of course, it's a page from our GOP playbook -- can't dare offend one's underwriters.

If he were serious (why bother finishing this sentence) he would promise jail time for the owners of companies advertising for and hiring illegal immigrants. I can bloody well guarantee the problem would go away.

You know the usual suspects are going to be using the UK as precedent. The same people that would ban single payer will lovingly quote Cameron and his band of Tory goons.

and please spare me the "Tories are not like our GOP" biz, because they only reason they are not is because Maggie Thatcher laid such a stinkbomb that they had to concede certain things, which, once they learn to use Koch style bribery, will be fixed.

So, if it's one guy who earns £15,000, and employed an assistant at £10,000 for a year, he's fined £5,000; if it's a company whose CEO gets £300,000, and they employed workers at £8,000 for a year, they're fined £292,000. For each worker.

The Schengen Treaty gives them plenty of access to cheap eastern European labor. I'm sure plenty of these workers are willing to work off the books.

The Schengen area and cooperation are founded on the Schengen Agreement of 1985. The Schengen area represents a territory where the free movement of persons is guaranteed. The signatory states to the agreement have abolished all internal borders in lieu of a single external border.
