Vandals damage California dam, release 50 million gallons of water
By Amy R. Connolly | May 23, 2015 at 11:27 AM

FREMONT, Calif., May 23 (UPI) -- Vandals damaged an inflatable dam holding back some 50 million gallons of drinking water, releasing enough water to serve 500 families for an entire year.

Police said the vandals entered a restricted area to damage the thick, rubber dam that was constructed in 1971. Police have no suspects or reasons for the damage. Repairs are expected to cost $3 million.

The vandalism comes as California struggles with a severe drought and is under unprecedented water restrictions.

"This is a very significant loss of water under any circumstances, and more so in the drought conditions we are experiencing," said Robert Shaver of the Alameda County Water District. "It is an utterly senseless, destructive and wasteful thing to do."

Especially if it was done as some kind of activist statement, no matter what the political bent.

These people need to go to jail for a very long time.

Every year a certain percentage of water ceases to exist on Earth.

Which is just one reason we need to get off the planet.

Earth's water supply remains fairly constant. That doesn't mean that we should be free to waste it, especially in areas suffering from drought.

There has to be serious punishment for this serious crime. Not just a token fine: a LARGE fine, and jail time.

I would really like to know how they knew for certain this was vandals. They were already in the process of replacing this dam and, given the usual competence of government, probably waited until it was on the verge of failure to even start the process. Maybe this is just a failure due to age?

Since Most of the vandalism in the United States is done by seventh grade boys, I have to assume whoever did this will brag about it, and be caught. If they turn out to be black, Mexican or gay it was the work of "organized Terrorists"! If they turn out to be white and middle class it was just a "typical teenage prank". That's Justice today in America.
