Strong Quake Rattles Tokyo Area, No Damage or Injury Reports

Source: AP

A strong earthquake rattled the Japanese capital of Tokyo and its suburbs Monday, with a preliminary magnitude reading of 5.6, shaking buildings and temporarily stopping trains.

There were no immediate reports of damages or casualties from the quake, which struck at 2:28 p.m. (0528 GMT). The Japanese Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning as a cautionary measure, but removed it within minutes.

The quake was centered in the northern part of Saitama Prefecture, a state northwest of Tokyo, and 50 kilometers (31 miles) below ground level, the agency said.

The quake shook all 23 wards of Tokyo, as well as the surrounding prefectures including Ibaraki, Tochigi, Saitama and Gunma.

About 40 miles out of Tokyo. It rated a 5- on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, which means that some minor damage could have occurred. At my place, some trinkets on some shelves were knocked over, and there was a bit of heavy shaking, but that was it.

Interestingly, the epicenter was pretty far from my town. And the magnitude was only 5.6.

At first, I thought you were referring to the Kashima Antlers, one of the local professional soccer clubs.

Anyway that's what the joke was suppose to be.

Any aftershocks over there?

Are you sure it was an earthquake and not Godzilla?

the next day there was a 3.5 earthquake centered around Hitachi, about 75 miles from the 5.6 epicenter. But that one was so weak, almost no one felt it.
