Stillwater Mining reaches tentative agreement with union

BILLINGS (AP) – Montana’s largest mining company has reached a tentative labor agreement with union leaders.
Thursday’s announcement from Stillwater Mining Co. follows complaints from workers that company executives received pay raises even as they sought to cut miners’ pay.
Members of the union are slated to vote on the proposed agreement next week.
United Steelworkers local president Scott McGinnis says there would be no wage cuts, but some production incentives for miners would change. He says the agreement covers roughly 900 workers at Stillwater’s platinum and palladium mine near Nye and smelter and refinery in Columbus.

Wives of Stillwater Miners held signs in support of workers throughout the weekend.
COLUMBUS -
Contract negotiations were in full swing on Monday as the Stillwater Mine and its workers look to come to terms before that contract expires June 1st.
While nearly 1,000 union workers remain under contract for the time being, a group of women called "Wives of Stillwater Miners" is standing up in support for all in the union, standing along Pike Avenue in Columbus with signs.
The union says Stillwater Mine posted record profits for last year, exceeding $70 million.
It also says the company is looking to slash workers pay and benefits by 25 percent.
