Edward P. Gilligan, the second in command at American Express, died unexpectedly on Friday, the company said in a statement. He was 55.
Mr. Gilligan died after becoming seriously ill on a flight home to New York on Friday morning, the companys chief, Kenneth I. Chenault, said.
Ed was a living embodiment of our values, embracing both our heritage of service, trust and integrity, as well as our entrepreneurial spirit that has helped continually transform this company through the years, Mr. Chenault said in a statement. The mark of a true leader is followership, and Ed won the hearts and minds of many thousands.
Mr. Gilligan started at the company 35 years ago as an intern and eventually rose to the post of president two years ago. He was largely seen as the likely successor to Mr. Chenault.
