Dennis Hastert Tells Friends: I am a victim, too

That is the word former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert is using to describe himself, one day after he was indicted on charges that he illegally attempted to conceal bank withdrawals. That cash used to pay hush money to a former studenta male who was sexually abused by Hastert when he was a high school teacher and coach, according to federal sources.
CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports, Hastert was neither been seen or heard from publicly on Friday, but he has told close friends that he was sorry people had to go though this ordeal.
I am a victim, too, Hastert told them.
Hasterts first words to associates were in response to charges of illegally withdrawing money to pay $3.5 million in hush money to a man to compensate and conceal prior misconduct. Hastert had actually paid the man $1.7 million, according to the indictment.

You know, you just can't make this up. According to CBS Chicago's, Jay Levine, Hastert thinks he is a "victim too"

(51,280 posts)a "victim" of being one of the most intellectually lazy pieces of spittle blowing bullshit on the planet.
Perhaps he can be "victimized" in an institutional setting in a corporately run prison.

(5,840 posts)I can't begin to imagine what would have been worth $3.5 million bucks to hush up. Republicans are always getting themselves in sex scandals, many of them gay sex scandals. Most of them make some insincere apology with their idiotic wives standing by their sides and they move on. What in hell could have been worth $3.5 million?

(10,495 posts)that instituted a "V" shaped accounting curve. If the victim lost money in 2010 and then started to recover in 2011 they could be compensated. They knew some would fit the V without the losses being caused by the spill. Their lawyers explained to the judge on the record that they understood this, but it would be diminimus. Immediately after the deal was approved BP appealed this part of the agreement for those very reasons and the 5th Circuit agreed with them. They planted stories all over about being victimized by having to pay people/companies who didn't deserve the money!
The real kicker is that most businesses didn't recover in 2011, it was 2012 or later, or else they failed, in which case they got NOTHING! BP saved 10's of billions with this scam! The Plaintiff's Steering Committee appointed by the judge won't object because BP promised them $600,000,000 if the deal makes it through without being overturned.
Currently the settlement is denying 75% of the victims. For 4,000 failed business only 7 were paid, the rest denied.
This is what perps do and we tend to let them get away with it if they are rich and powerful. Hastert is no longer powerful and probably not rich enough to get off. Coupled with the enemies he probably made while in power he will be screwed. We can only hope!

If you'd told them you were using the withdrawals to pay a blackmailer, you WOULDN'T be facing these charges -- and you COULD be filing criminal charges against Individual A for being a blackmailer!
Cue the official DU "Cry Me A River" String Quartet!

(216 posts)As bad as the allegations against him are, why isn't there more discussion about how a former teacher can amass such wealth by going to Congress. Public service or self service?

(25,586 posts)People who commit acts of sexual assault (and that's what sex with a minor is) on minors often carry the scars of abuse themselves. This in no way absolves them of their guilt in the slightest, of course.
