No Charges in White Plains Police Shooting of Marine:DA

Source: NBC New York

A grand jury has declined to bring charges against White Plains police in the shooting of a 68-year-old former Marine at his apartment last year.

The grand jury's decision was announced Thursday by Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore.

"After due deliberation on the evidence presented in this matter, the grand jury found that there was no reasonable cause to vote an indictment," she said.

An attorney for the Chamberlain family said the family will seek a federal investigation

This is beyond me. The NBC news clip does not come close to telling the whole story. Check out this democracynow segment:

I seriously do not understand how the police can bust into your apartment and shoot you when you've done nothing wrong. All they had to do was turn around and walk away. I usually don't want the feds to investigate, but in this case, I hope the feds bring charges against the officers.

They were called on a MEDICAL ALERT!
The poor man just wanted them to go away- he was clearly frightened.
His sister was assured he would be fine, the alert company told the police
it was a false alarm and that Mr. Chamberlin was not in any sort of distress-
all of it was recorded, documented on the medical alert device and it is
clear to any one with a brain that they MURDERED the man.

I hope the feds do their job; it was a senseless act of violence by police
responding to a MEDICAL alert!

It is just surreal- the whole story, and now this...negligence all around this case.

6. Conservative claims police had to enter

I was discussing this with some conservatives who somehow believe the police were justified in the killing. They say police procedure required them to enter because what if the man yelling was not KC but somebody who had injured the real KC. Of course, there were many ways to have that question of identity answered without busting in and shooting the man. And the LifeAlert company was canceling the distress call so that should have been a trigger that they no longer needed to enter. Plus his sister could have identified his voice and on and on.

(I know it's been awhile since this post first went up, so I hope I'm not violating any forum rules by responding so late.)

The alarm company, his sister and niece had identified him.
