A Virginia man was arrested and charged this weekend from planning to assassinate President Barack Obama, according to the Associated Press.
Christopher Hecker sent out an email to media outlets on April 19 planning to bomb the White House, Philadelphia City Hall, the former site of the World Trade Center, and other places. The FBI tracked the email to Hackers account and lead to the Secret Service exchanging emails with him, in which he revealed more plans to bomb locations.
Secret Service agents arrested him after he signed onto a computer at the Waynesboro, Virginia Public Library.
Hacker refused to be sworn during an appearance in a federal court in Charlottesville, Virginia on Friday, telling a judge that he wanted to be sentenced immediately and given the death penalty. The judge ordered Hecker to undergo a psychological evaluation.

(18,619 posts)is not an arbitrary date for this kind of activity.
It may be a coincidence, and this guy may just be a nut, but Tim McVeigh also asked to be executed immediately.

(10,893 posts)how whenever someone gets caught plotting to kill a politician, it usually is a conservative. I know these people love their guns and playing around with their death penalties and such, but good grief...in fact, I don't think I've ever seen any liberals plotting murders on any Republicans.

Maybe these plotters are acting out of some pretty wicked anxiety/paranoia.

(10,857 posts)It runs roughly north-south, and is usually wide enough to be lined with pairs of cities running down its length.
The cities on the west side (Allegheny side) tend to be quite nice, with good universities, including James Madison, Virginia Tech, and Washington and Lee, and high turnout in favor of Democrats.
The cities on the east side (Blue Ridge side) have religious and community colleges, higher poverty, and tend to vote heavily Republican.
This guy is from the east side. Waynesboro was named for "Mad" Anthony Wayne. Our Valley's most amusing practical joker once proposed putting up a 60-foot monument to Wayne in the city's landfill.
I think there is something in the water around here.

(I guess UVA is the exception with regard to your scenario.)

(10,857 posts)They're just on the other side of the Blue Ridge and therefore not part of the Valley, so I wasn't counting it even though it does have a role to play.
In Northern Virginia terms, Charlottesville is Fairfax and Staunton is Leesburg, with Waynesboro being an even less charming Sterling between them. There is even a little village called Fishersville which is being Ashburned as we speak. Just on a smaller scale.
