Mitt Romney: 'I'll Take A Lot Of Credit' For Auto Industry Recovery
Source: Huffington Post
Despite his 2008 call to "let Detroit go bankrupt," presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney said Monday that he would "take a lot of credit" for his impact on the U.S. automobile industry's comeback.
During an interview with WEWS-TV in Cleveland following a campaign stop, Romney said his views helped save the industry.
"I pushed the idea of a managed bankruptcy," Romney said. "And finally, when that was done, and help was given, the companies got back on their feet. So I'll take a lot of credit for the fact that this industry's come back."
Both General Motors and Chrysler ended up taking the massive federal loans supported by both President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush. The bailout included managed bankruptcy filings for both companies. According to the federal judge who presided over Chrysler's bankruptcy in 2009, the company would not have survived without the bailout. Ford survived without taking a government loan.

(2,682 posts)Not only did he say Let Detroit go Bankrupt, he spent time and energy explaining his position in detail. He was totally and completely AGAINST loans to the auto industry.
Now that it has been proven that his position was in total error, he seeks to STEAL the results as his own. But, I'll bet dollars to doughnut holes that he would not have shared the blame if it had gone wrong.
He is a soul-less liar who will take any position he thinks will gain him positive advertising, whether he deserves it or not.
Pardon me while I go barf up my dinner...... he makes me sick.

(24,396 posts)And why not? He's watched as voters have voted against their own self interest by electing Rs for decades. Apparently, people will believe anything you say as long as you're an R, so why not make the lies a brazen as needs must to fit the situation?
By Wednesday, this will have become a meme in the RWNM, another example of a Rovian attack against a candidate's strength. In this case, Obama's strength in bailing out the auto industry with taxpayer-funded loans. The Rove strategy is to sow confusion into the minds of the voters so a false equivalency is reached between Obama and Romney, thereby neutralizing a talking point for Obama.
"Obama saved the auto industry? But didn't Romney have a big part in that too?"
You'll know the technique has worked once again when some Dem pol or pundit opines that, "technically, Romney is correct." That's the sign that the Big Lie has taken hold and that Obama has been swift boated on Detroit.

(9,350 posts)So, President Obama, the guy who gave the order to launch the assault on Osama Bin Laden's compound, cannot take credit for the results of that event, but Mitt Romney, the guy who said General Motors and Chrysler should not be bailed out, should take credit for the current success of the auto industry. That is just ridiculous. Words cannot describe the ridiculousness of what Romney is saying and what he will attempt to do.

Can you imagine putting the full faith and credit of the United States in the hands of such a dishonest, immoral and corrupt person? The thought just makes your head spin.
It is not just that Romney has been so wrong on the issues in the past but that this man has no soul. He would be the second coming of Richard M. Nixon only worse. I despise the man even more than the policies he pushes -- he is that revolting and disgusting.

(69,059 posts)IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It wont go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.
Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check.
<snip>
First, their huge disadvantage in costs relative to foreign brands must be eliminated. That means new labor agreements to align pay and benefits to match those of workers at competitors like BMW, Honda, Nissan and Toyota. Furthermore, retiree benefits must be reduced so that the total burden per auto for domestic makers is not higher than that of foreign producers.
<snip>
The new management must work with labor leaders to see that the enmity between labor and management comes to an end. This division is a holdover from the early years of the last century, when unions brought workers job security and better wages and benefits. But as Walter Reuther, the former head of the United Automobile Workers, said to my father, Getting more and more pay for less and less work is a dead-end street.
