Judy Carne, ‘Laugh-In’s’ ‘Sock it to Me’ Girl, Dies at 76

Source: Variety

Actress Judy Carne, best known for being the “Sock it to me!” girl on “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” in the ’60s, died on Sept. 3, according to the Telegraph. She was 76.

Carne rose to overnight fame with her appearances on “Laugh-In,” where the bouncy actress’ zany persona would be doused with water every time she uttered the phrase “Sock it to me,” accidentally or not. She acted on the sketch comedy show for two years, making the occasional appearance in the third season.

Carne was also known for her tumultuous relationship with Burt Reynolds. She was the actor’s first wife, marrying him in 1963 before they divorced in 1965. She detailed their relationship, confessing to partaking in several affairs and struggling with drug addiction, in her 1985 autobiography “Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside: The Bittersweet Saga of the Sock-It-To-Me Girl.”

She battled heavily with drug addiction after leaving “Laugh-In,” being charged with heroin possession and prescription forgery in the late ’70s. She was acquitted of the heroin charge.

I love Laugh-In. But Judy Carne apparently hated her role as the sock it to me gal.

RIP Judy. No more sock it to me for you.

My mother was terrified that I was going to repeat "scandalous" Laugh-In stock phrases line "Sock it to me", "You bet your bippy", and "Verrrry interesting" in front of my very conservative grandparents.

RIP, Judy

sisters in 71 and 72. Youngest sister still lives in the family home purchased originally in the early 50s. Last year we attended the funeral of a former Burbank neighbor and it was like attending a giant multi-class BHS reunion. They came from all over. You may have even known some of them from way back.

I wonder if that played a role in her drug problems. She was in a body cast and had one those halo braces screwed into her skull. It's a miracle she didn't die or become quadriplegic.

I wonder how she survived all these years.

in June that year, while celebrating her acquittal on charges of heroin possession, she and Bergmann (who was driving) were involved in a near-fatal car accident which left her with a broken neck.

According to this obit she admitted to being a wild child who never grew up

like each other that they could have been twins and they were both British with accent and all. Time sure does fly by at an alarming rate. Yesterday I was a freshman in high school watching Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In and today I'm an old fart typing on my keyboard to post on DU.

RIP Ms. Carne
