Obama Asks Administration to Accept at Least 10,000 Syrian Refugees in 2016

Source: ABC News

President Obama has directed his administration to accept at least 10,000 more Syrian refugees in the next fiscal year, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said today.

“The president has directed his team to consider how we can further scale up our response and one thing that the United States can do is to begin to admit more Syrian refugees into the United States,” Earnest told reporters. “The president has directed his team to scale up that number next year and he's informed his team that he would like them to accept, at least make preparations to accept at least 10,000 Syrian refugees in the next fiscal year.”

Earnest said the United States will take in about 1,500 Syrian refugees in FY2015, which ends at the end of the month.

He added that financial assistance is “by far the most effective way” for the United States to meet this urgent humanitarian need, by providing Syrians with medical supplies, food, water and education.

We cannot let our European allies accept this burden alone, especially since we’re the fucking idiots who started this whole mess to begin with.

step up and help with the refugees. Countries that have no responsibility for the wars are stepping up. The least we can do is our share.

For several reasons, in no particular order:

The part of NM where I live is already very diverse and there is a very nice Muslim community growing here.

The neighborhood I live in is pretty affordable (by local standards, which is still a bit pricey...) and we have a number of unoccupied homes nearby that we'd love to see filled with neighbors.

NM is a dirt-poor state, and the city I live in currently has a hella budget shortfall, and any Federal assistance helping with resettlement for refugees would be MORE than welcome.

The community I live in is inclusive and aware of issues around global peace, equity, and sustainability, and it's an opportunity for us to act our ideals right here at home.

They might find the climate (arid but moderate) to their liking.

hopefully,
Bright

and the gulf states, Israel (who arent taking any refugees) for backing the "rebels" in Syria. Time to stop our interventionism in the mideast.

10,000 is a great start but we should take millions from the Middle East and Africa.
There is a lot of land in our country that is underutilized, most of it in red states, literally thousands of small communities that are dying because of declining population. HUD could resettle these refugees all across the country instantly changing the demographics and reversing the decline of rural areas in the south, Midwest and western states. In a few short years these backwards dying red states would turn blue. Schools, businesses, farms and mosques would sprout up all across what now is a barren land and turn what we call 'fly over country' into a modern multicultural 21st century society. Think of it as a sort of 21st century homesteading replacing the decaying 19th century white Christian culture with refugees from our American imperial misadventures. I see it as one way to right one of the fundamental wrongs of the American experiment, let's bring these people here and let them have a turn at the American dream, it's the right thing to do, it's the American thing to do. One of the main reasons I supported President Obama in 2008 was because he had big ideas, a far reaching vision of how to transform America and right the wrongs of our history. We have a chance to change America forever, I hope we as a country are brave enough and generous enough to take this chance.
