BURBANK, Calif. (AP) Law enforcement officers in Southern California searched in rugged mountain terrain for a second day on Sunday for a missing FBI agent who was said to be despondent and possibly suicidal.
About 100 FBI agents, 40 sheriff's department rescuers and a dozen local police officers participated in the search for Los Angeles-based Special Agent Stephen Ivens. He was described as an avid hiker and runner.
FBI Special Agent Steve Gomez said dogs had tracked Ivens' scent toward the Verdugo Mountains, east of Burbank, but searchers have fanned out throughout Los Angeles County.
Ivens, 35, was last seen by family members Thursday evening, authorities said. He left his Burbank home the next morning on foot and had not been seen since, FBI officials said at a news conference. His wife reported him missing Friday at 7:30 a.m.
Ivens was distraught and authorities fear he may have harmed himself, according to KABC-TV. Officials did not say why Ivens was distraught.
A search of his home did not turn up his handgun and police believe he may have taken it with him.

Married with a one-year-old child, he has been working for the FBI for the past three years in the national security area. Prior to that, he worked as a Los Angeles police officer for eight years.
Well, this might not end well. I wonder what he did in National security?

(674 posts)140 law enforcement agents are mobilized because an FBI agent is distraught and may have harmed himself? There must be more to this story, like the agent in question is doing something or knows something that the FBI doesn't want to become public.

(22,143 posts)But this seems a lot more like they're afraid of what he might do to others than what he might do to himself.
Stephen King's "The Stand" started in a somewhat similar fashion. Oh, the fun!

(292 posts)I guess you mean the part where they are all trying to catch the infected guy who spreads the plague... took me a minute.

(292 posts)believes they are simply just trying to stop a person from destroying themselves and their family. I could see though how a bit of the response is related to damage control / PR.

(2,850 posts)It is reported his hands were tied behind his back, but they called it suicide. Wonder if he has already been 'taken care of' and they are just performing this theatre for the cover story...
We will likely never know what he has been working on.

(674 posts)I hope he is well and gets reunited with his family.
I also hope, if there is a darker tale behind this story, that we all find out the truth.
(that would be a first, wouldn't it?)
