Gas explosion at restaurant in central India triggers nearby explosives, killing at least 104

Source: ABC (Australia)

At least 104 people have been killed in central India after a cooking gas cylinder blew up in a restaurant and set fire to explosives stored nearby, police say.

The death toll rose rapidly from an initial count of 20 after rescuers recovered dozens more bodies from the debris of the destroyed restaurant and neighbouring buildings.

The gas cylinder exploded as people were gathering for breakfast at the restaurant in the town of Petlawad in the state of Madhya Pradesh, about 800 kilometres south of New Delhi, Inspector BL Gaur told Reuters.

Inspector Gaur said the restaurant was near an area which stored gelignite sticks used at construction sites.

Indian police are searching for the owner of a shop which they say had illegally stored explosives that triggered a blast, killing 90 people.
...
Police earlier thought a faulty gas cylinder in the restaurant was to blame, but now say the blast was caused by illegally stored mining explosives.
...
The shopkeeper, named as Rajendra Kasawa, had a licence for explosives for digging wells, construction and mining, district police official Seema Alava told AFP news agency.

But he had stored them "in an unauthorised way in a residential area" and was being sought on suspicion of culpable homicide.
