UC police arrest 9 as they clear Occupy the Farm

Police arrested nine people early Monday as they cleared out the small group of protesters who had set up an urban farming camp on UC Berkeley agricultural research land in Albany.
University police officers in riot helmets gave the protesters 1o minutes to leave the Gill Tract before they marched across the fields near Marin and San Pablo avenues at about 6:15 a.m. The few protesters who had not obeyed the police order scurried off the property and onto San Pablo, which officers had closed to traffic. The street was later reopened.
Two protesters were arrested on suspicion of trespassing after they disobeyed police orders to leave the property, said Lt. Eric Tejada, a police spokesman.
Work crews moved in shortly after 7:30 a.m. and began removing activists' tents and supplies. Several dozen protesters watched from the sidewalk. Seven were arrested on suspicion of unlawful assembly after they refused to move off San Pablo Avenue, said Dan Mogulof, a UC Berkeley spokesman.

(27,430 posts)There were people from Albany who went to observe and it was pretty peaceful. There's still one person sitting in a tree. Lots of trash to clean up, though.
I can see the tract from my deck and just looked out. There are a few people milling about and some people on the sidewalk on the east side of the tract. I might walk down later and see how it's going.

(32,324 posts)UC Berkeley has used its acreage to do "test plots" for the Big Agri Concerns. And then they claim it is absolutely necessary to blast said acreage with noxious pesticides, despite pleas of parents and community members.
Wouldn't it be nice if someday the Universities stood with the people and not with the Big Corporations?
