APNEWSBREAK: US MULLS ABSTENTION ON CUBA EMBARGO VOTE AT UN
Source: Associated Press
For the first time, the United States may be willing to accept a United Nations condemnation of the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba without a fight, The Associated Press has learned.
U.S. officials tell the AP that the Obama administration is weighing abstaining from the annual U.N. General Assembly vote on a Cuban-backed resolution demanding that the embargo be lifted. The vote could come next month.
No decision has yet been made, said four administration officials who weren't authorized to speak publicly on sensitive internal deliberations and demanded anonymity. But merely considering an abstention is unprecedented. Following through on the idea would send shock waves through both the United Nations and Congress.
It is unheard of for a U.N. member state not to oppose resolutions critical of its own laws.

(85,373 posts)I have two plausible scenarios:
1) This is to create a "The UN made me do it" excuse for Obama to drop the embargo at last
2) Something much more awful is being born, and attention has slipped from yesterday's news
If I were the Pope, I'd think twice about visiting right now....

(85,373 posts)I'm flattered. It's just a pattern I've detected: lately, even the wonks in DC can't keep up with all the loose strings, cannons, and subplots. Stuff that gets dropped is dropped either because they've been caught out (usually by Putin, lately, hence the animus), or something even worse is about to blow.

Not to worry, I've got my secret radio pen tucked away right here in my pocket . . . well, it was here!
Chief, have you seen my pen, I seem to have misplaced it?
Chief? Chief?
Do you know where the Chief is, 99?
99? 99?
Now, that's odd.
They were standing right over there just a second ago.
I wonder where everyone has gone?

It's seems more a ballsy poke at the GOP running Congress. Regarding #2, perhaps it may lead to some controversial agreement to extradite some folks like Joanne Chesimard (and others), which would cause it's own discordant reactions here among the left.
I doubt there is an issue with the Pope right now... To the monied PTB, he is harmless and serves those PTB to continue to carry out their "religion is the opiate of the masses" doctrine despite his digs at them because those "digs" have no force of authority that will impact them.

Too bad right wing Cuban American congress critters and their ilk.
