Flash floods threaten Desert Southwest

A forecast of heavy rain today and Tuesday in the Desert Southwest and southern California could trigger another round of "life-threatening flash floods," according to the National Weather Service.

"Amounts of 1 to 2 inches or greater are possible across a large part of Arizona and the deserts of southern California Monday and Tuesday, with locally higher amounts likely," the weather service said.

As much as 8 inches of rain could pelt some areas, Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters said.

Flash flood watches are in place across most of southern California, southern Arizona and western New Mexico. This includes the cities of Phoenix and Tucson and their metro areas.
