As clock ticks, Senate seeks way to avert shutdown

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Plans to avert a U.S. government shutdown began taking shape in the Senate on Tuesday, but it was still far from certain whether a dispute over funding for women's healthcare group Planned Parenthood could be overcome.
With only days remaining before an Oct. 1 deadline, Senate leaders said they were pursuing a stop-gap funding bill to extend the present federal budget for about 10 weeks beyond the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year.
Known as a continuing resolution, or CR, this approach was gaining traction, said senior senators from both parties.
Meanwhile, the White House budget office began working with government agencies on shutdown plans.

(631 posts)By the Republican Party, with Generals Cruz and Paul leading the assault on these trumped up charges that have no basis in fact. I hope the millions of women who depend on Planned Parenthood, their sisters, mothers, brothers, fathers, and husbands, are watching to see to what lengths these fanatics will go in their war on women.

(12,563 posts)10 weeks puts the CR expiration date in mid-December. The last day the Senate is in session is December 18, which means there will be lots of pressure from government employees to get a bill --- any bill -- passed before Congress starts its two week Christmas vacation. Conservative leaders are probably counting on this pressure to get the anti-Planned Parenthood version of the bill passed.
Holding the government hostage is a stupid way to govern, but no one ever said the Tea Baggers were smart.
